#GenderEqualityForMen: Global Surge of Support for Men and Boys
March 3, 2025 – Twelve months ago the International Council for Men and Boys (ICMB) launched a global campaign to address the 12 areas of male disadvantage (1). The ICMB is gratified to now report that this plea has been heard around the world, as revealed by numerous recent developments:
Australia:
- Bettina Arndt launched a national effort to address legal biases against men in that country. Arndt characterizes the move to broaden definitions of domestic violence as a “massive steamroller, mowing down more and more men.” (2)
India:
- The Kerala High Court handed down a historic decision on February 24 highlighting the problem of false allegations. The Court pointedly wrote, “Merely because the de facto complainant is a lady, there is no presumption that, in all cases, her versions are gospel truth.” (3)
Spain:
- The Vox political party will be holding an event on March 4 at the Congress of Deputies titled, “Grandmothers Silenced by Feminism.” The event will highlight how biased domestic violence laws are harming relationships in the extended family (4).
Trinidad and Tobago:
- Last week Ayanna Webster-Roy of the Gender Affairs Division announced the establishment of a Men’s Bureau, dedicated to providing a “structured approach to effectively dealing with the challenges affecting men’s personal and professional lives.” (5)
United Kingdom:
- The Centre for Social Justice just issued a report, Lost Boys, that concludes bluntly, “Boys and young men are in crisis.” (6)
- Psychology professor Benjamin Hine released his new book, Current Issues Facing Men and Boys. The tome addresses male mental health, the media, education, work, sexual behaviour, relationships, fatherhood, and more (7).
United States:
- Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer, long-time advocate for women’s rights, issued an impassioned statement to address a range of challenges affecting young men. Whitmer promised, “I’m signing an executive directive that will make an effort to reach more young men and boost their enrollment in our higher education and skills training programs.” (8)
- A national survey conducted February 27-28 found that 73% of Americans agree that society should invest in addressing some of the societal challenges that men face, such as higher rates of suicide, homelessness, and work fatalities. In particular, 57% of survey respondents supported greater “mental health support specifically for men.” (9)
This year the United Nations is observing the 30-year anniversary of the Beijing Declaration. The Declaration makes numerous references to “gender equality.” But inexplicably, gender equality for men has been accorded little or no attention, until now.
The International Council for Men and Boys is a non-governmental organization that is working to celebrate the contributions of men to society and to end the 12 disparities that affect men and boys around the world. Achieving #GenderEqualityForMen also will benefit women. https://www.menandboys.net/
