Urgent Call for Lawmakers and Others to Address Global Crisis Affecting Men and Boys

October 30, 2024 – Around the world, men and boys are facing an unprecedented human rights crisis. This crisis is contributing to a range of social problems such as the weakening of the family, plummeting birth rates, and the dad-deprivation of millions of children (1).

Globally, men and boys are lagging behind women and girls in 12 areas: Education, Health, Child labor, False allegations, Victims of violence, Parenting, Treatment by the criminal system, Partner abuse, Homelessness, Workplace injuries and deaths, Reproductive and adoption rights, and Media portrayals (2).

The men and boys crisis has reached the point that statements of concern have been issued by lawmakers and governmental bodies in 14 countries around the world (3). In Denmark for example, Minister for Equality Marie Bjerre explained, “For far too long we have not taken it seriously enough that men can also be victims of intimate partner violence and need help. The time has come to ensure that abused men and their children receive the same help as when a woman reaches out for help.” (4)

“Equality is for both women and men,” Bjerre concluded.

Last December, the crisis of men and boys was brought to the attention of the United Nations when Mongolian Minister of Foreign Affairs Battsetseg Batmunkh announced her government’s “She for He” initiative (5).  In Mongolia, the life expectancy of men is nine years shorter than for females. Similar “She for He” efforts have been launched in numerous other countries (6).

Men’s Equality Month will be observed in November by dozens of organizations in countries around the world (7). Men’s Equality Month is designed to complement Women’s History Month, held each year in March.

On Tuesday, November 19, UN ambassadors, human rights advocates, media representatives, and others are invited to attend a Reception, beginning at 6:00pm, and Press Conference, beginning at 6:30pm to be held in New York City. For more information, contact Mr. Walther at mwalther@menandboys.net

A recent editorial highlights how the male electorate has become the new “Power Demographic” in the upcoming U.S. elections (8). All persons are urged to take steps and speak out to remedy the global crisis of men and boys.

The International Council for Men and Boys is a non-governmental organization that is working to celebrate the contributions of men to society and to end the 12 sex disparities that affect men and boys around the world.  Achieving #GenderEqualityForMen also will benefit women.  https://www.menandboys.net/
